A fine point tip is a standard shape when having sharpened your pencil with a pencil sharpener. The sharp point allows for drawing fine lines where accuracy is important.
Chisel tip
The chisel tip is commonly found on many carpenter’s pencils that have been sharpened with a utility knife. The chisel tip allows the user to draw both fine and thick lines depending at which angle they use the pencil.
Flat tip
The flat tip is often found on pencils used by artists. As with the chisel tip you would need a sharp utility knife to sharpen it to this shape. The flat tip can mark thick or thin lines depending at which angle you use the pencil. It is ideal when you need to shade in large areas of a workpiece.
Ornate tip
Because of the hardness and quality of a carpenter’s pencil lead it can be carved into very intricate shapes depending on your needs – although miniature ellephants may be entirely impractical for DIY tasks.
