A mixing board is a masonry tool used as a platform when mixing materials such as sand and cement. For instance, mixing boards are often used when making mortar using specific amounts of sand, cement, plasticiser and water (see How to use a mixing board).
The actual mixing is done manually, with a shovel, which has upturned sides on its blade so the material being mixed can’t slide off easily. The mixing board simply provides a convenient surface on which the mixing operation takes place.
Mixing boards are also used to hold the mixed materials, such as mortar and concrete, while you are working with them subsequently.
This prevents unattractive stains from appearing on the site you are working on and helps keep it clean.
