The two jaws form an assembly in which the jaws are joined with a pivot pin. One of the jaws is fixed relative to the shaft and the other is curved and spring-loaded relative to the fixed jaw.
This assembly allows the adjustable jaws to be opened and closed and also flipped over, this means the tool can be used to either tighten or loosen.
Spring-loaded jaw
Because the curved jaw is spring-loaded, it is forced downwards and will automatically grip on a nut or fastener whichever position it is in and whatever size the nut is.
The greater the leverage on the handle, the greater the grip on the jaws.
Fixed jaw
The fixed jaw is attached to the shaft with a pivot pin which allows the jaw assembly to rotate about its axis perpendicular to the shaft.
This rotation permits the jaws to be flipped over the end of the shaft depending on whether you are tightening or loosening a nut.
Jaw teeth
Both of the jaws on an adjustable basin wrench are toothed. These teeth help to grip the nut or fitting you wish to turn. The jaw will only grip (and tighten onto the nut) in one direction. Flip the head (or jaw) over to reverse the action of the tool.
Whether you are tightening or loosening, you should always rotate your tool so that you are rotating into the jaw.
This will mean that the teeth will grip the nut and the jaws will work effectively.
Adjustable basin tap wrench shaft
The shaft is a metal rod that connects to the lower jaw via a pivot pin. The Tommy-bar (often called a “T-bar”) handle fits through a hole at the other end of the shaft.
Tommy-bar handle
The T-bar handle passes through a hole in the shaft.
It is rotated by the user to either tighten or loosen a nut or fitting.
The T-bar handle can be moved to the right or left to conform to cramped working spaces or so that you can apply greater leverage when turning. The ends of the Tommy-bar handle are usually shaped or capped to prevent it from being removed from the shaft.
Pivot pins
The pivot pin attaches the fixed jaw to the shaft and allows it to pivot on its axis. This allows you to flip it over and reverse the action.
The curved, spring-loaded jaw is attached to the fixed jaw and can open and close via the pivot point.
Interchangeable jaws
Adjustable basin tap wrenches with interchangeable jaws have the same parts as a standard model but has additional jaws.
The standard small jaws can be used on nuts and fittings measuring between 6mm-25mm (1/4 – 1 inch).
Medium jaw
The medium-sized jaw can be used on nuts and fittings measuring between 15mm-38mm (5/8 – 1.5 inch).
Large jaw
The large jaw can be used on nuts and fittings measuring between 25mm-50mm (1 – 2 inch)
